HealthyStuff.org tests new cars for what chemicals are being released inside the cab.  They also rate cars as to their healthy potential with less chemicals released.

The #1 toxic chemical in car interiors is off gassing of the plastic PVC used.  During production the manufacturing workers get exposed to the vinyl chloride monomer and/or dioxin, both probable carcinogens.  This chemical is continually given off even after it winds up in a landfill somewhere.  PVC also can off gass plasticizers or “softeners” otherwise known as toxic phthalates.

The car occupant is also exposed to brominated flame retardants (BFR) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers, hexabromocyclodecane and tetrabromobisphenol.  In 2012 , 40% of vehicles contained these chemicals in their interior.

The manufacturers are aware of the problem and things may be slowly improving.  In 2006 only 2% of vehicle interiors were free of PVC and BFR.  In 2012, 8% and now free of both these chemicals.

Which car interior is safest?

• The lowest use of PVC’s is Honda, Suzuki and Mazda.  (As of 2012 Honda has eliminated PVC in 83% of their vehicles).  The highest use is Daimler AG, Saab and Volvo.
• The Honda Civic is the overall best rated car for all chemicals.
• Toyota Prius is second best, followed by the Honda CR-Z, Nissan Cube and Acura RDX and ZDX.
• The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was the worst-rated vehicle. Next worst was Chrysler 200SC, Kia Soul and Nissan Versa.

Natural Cereals That Are NOT NATURAL!

consumer.  You must know what to look for when making a purchase.  There are no areas where this is as important as in the foods you eat.  Manufacturers make claims with no real basis for accuracy of truth.  These cereals say they are natural but CONTAIN UNNATURAL INGREDIENTS.

1. Kashi GoLean – Corn and soy from genetically modified crops.  Owned by Kellogg  Company, which has no policy against using toxic pesticides, hexane and GMO        ingredients.
2. Nutritious Living Hi-Lo – 85% of soy is genetically modified and was likely sprayed with    pesticide RoundUp
3. Kix – 50% of corn content was GMO.
4. Barbara’s Bakery Puffins – 55% of corn is genetically modified, not close to natural.
5. Peace Cereal – no organic ingredients apparent and 55% of strawberries in the cereal contain the cancer causing pesticide Captan.
6. Mother’s Bumbers – 30% of corn content is GMO.  Owned by Pepsico which has no  organic policy and uses tons of sulfuryl fluoride, a fumigant on many food ingredients
7. Back to Nature – Owned by Kraft Foods, has only one variety of Back to Nature which is  organic.  The other varieties use fumigants and other pesticides which the USDA     has found still in the final product..
8. Grape Nuts and Posts Natural Advantage Line – ingredients are grown with pesticides.     The USDA found traces of pesticides like malathion, chlorpyrifos methyl and chlorpyrifos that could cause harmful neurologic effects on development of      children.
9. Kelogg’s Low-FatGranola – Contains high fructose corn syrup and partially  hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors.  Again Kelloggs uses GMO and artificial   ingredients in most of their products.

Remember – Genetically Modified Crops are produced so they can be SPRAYED WITH HERBICIDES AND INSECTICIDES.

Could Orthodontic Braces Be Destroying Our Children’s Health?

appliances, contain 8%-12% nickel and 17%-22% chromium.  In spite of trying to minimize the effects of metal in saliva, these devices do corrode in the mouth and thereby release metals into the body. This is a slow and steady exposure, increasing as corrosion increases.

Nickel and chromium can cause hypersensitivity, dermatitis and Cytotoxicity (cell poisoning).  They are listed with the Environmental Protection Agency as having significant carcinogenic and mutagenic potential (can cause cancer and abnormal cell growth).  At a lower dose they can cause DNA alterations (mutations).

This study evaluated salivary levels of nickel and chromium for up to 30 days after placement of orthodontic appliance systems.  A limitation of this study was the limited time wearing the devices in the mouth.  Orthodontic appliances can be on the teeth for up to three years or more, and 30 days is very short for corrosion to increase.

Even with this imitation, the study found that nickel and chromium released into saliva from the orthodontic appliances increased during the first week and was less when measured at day 30.  What happens during three year exposure was not evaluated.  In addition, exposure to the toxic metals is not only from the saliva but is also absorbed from inhalation of the metal vapor off the alloy, and swallowing released metals.

In my opinion the exposure is much greater than revealed in this study.

Mediterranean Diet Promotes Brain Health

1,000 people and their diets.  Specifically they analyzed how closely the participants followed a Mediterranean diet, ie plant-based foods like fruits, nuts, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, and using olive oil with little butter. It uses little red meat with more emphasis on fish and poultry, with moderate red wine consumption.

Of the participants, 26% scored highly on keeping this type of diet while 27% scored fairly low.  They all underwent an MRI brain scan.  The white matter hyperintensity of the brain is a marker of small vessel damage in the brain.

The brain scans revealed that those that held closely to the Mediterranean diet had a lower burden of white matter hyperintensity.  The greater brain damage, attributed to the regular diet participants also shows elevated with other risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Conclusion: There is a connection between the protective action of a Mediterranean diet and minimal small vessel damage in the brain.  A healthy diet promotes a healthy brain!

Genetically Modified Foods Lead to Poisoning Of Our Mothers and Babies

foods have their DNA altered to tolerate the herbicides and pesticides that are sprayed on the crops.  These poisons include herbicides such as glyphosate and gluphosinate and insecticides like bacterial toxin bacillus thuringiensis.  Included in these types of poisons are those manufactured by Monsanto such as Round Up spray.

This study from evaluated maternal and fetal exposure from these poisons being used in Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada.  Blood of 30 pregnant women and 39 nonpregnant women were studied.  Results showed the presence of the circulating pesticides in both sets of women and their unborn children.

This opens up a new field of medicine: reproductive toxicology with nutrition and intrauterine toxicities (fetal poisoning).

Does Alcohol Consumption Actually Increase Creativity?

University of Illinois at Chicago tested men who had a slight increase in their blood alcohol levels.  The first 20 volunteers watched an animated movie while eating a snack.  They drank enough vodka-cranberry drinks to raise their blood alcohol levels to 0.075 percent, just below the legal limit for intoxification.  Another 20 volunteers watched the same movie without the snacks or alcohol.  They were each then asked to complete a problem-solving task.

The subjects with alcohol levels solved 9 problems correctly and opposed to the sober ones solving only 6 correctly.   The intoxicated ones also took 11.5 seconds to answer as opposed to 15.2 for the sober ones.  Both groups answered similarly in accuracy and speed before the study began.

It appears moderate alcohol consumption loosens a person’s focus of attention and may make it easier to connect remotely related ideas.  These sudden, intuitive insights into tricky word-association problems were observed in the intoxicated subjects, while the sober ones had a more deliberate approach.  The creative enhancement observed while intoxicated may be applicable to other fields and challenges such as music or art.

Monsanto Charged with BioPiracy in India

Orange resistant seeds to plant genetically modified crops like corn and wheat; seeds that are sterile and cannot produce new seeds to plant.  The farmers are forced to go back and buy more seeds from Monsanto each year.

Now even overseas the Agri Giant is making enemies.  India’s National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is a government agency which among other things requires that any entity trying to use a native plant for commercial or research purposes must first get approval from the NBA.  Monsanto has been accused of “Stealing” a native type of eggplant to develop a genetically modified version.  With their collaborators, the Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company, they violated India’s Biological Diversity Act (BDA) from 2002 by illegally taking this plant.

It seems Monsanto is doing what it does best.  Taking wholesome food plants and making them genetically inferior to sell to the world.

No Honey in the Honey?

selling honey actually had NO honey inside.  According to definitions from the FDA, a product must have pollen inside to be called honey.  Some manufacturers and processors process the honey with high heat and filtration which removes or alters the product so no natural honey exists.  Much of this bogus honey has been dumped her from China and contains antibiotics, lead or other heavy metals.  No pollen!

Contents of 60 containers of honey purchased by the Food Safety News were analyzed for pollen at Texas A&M University.  What they found was:

76% of samples bought at grocery stores had ALL the pollen removed.  These included TOP Food, Safeway, Giant Eagle, QFC, Kroger Metro Market, Harris Tweeter, A&P, Stop&Shop and King Soopers.

1. 100% had no pollen in samples from drugstores like Walgreens, Rite-Aid and CVS.
2. 77% had no pollen from Costco, Sam’s Club, WalMart, Target and H-E-B.
3. 100% of small individual portions had no pollen from McDonald’s, KFC and Smucker.
4. GOOD NEWS!! Every sample bought at farmers markets, co-ops and “natural” food stores like Trader Joe’s and PCC had full pollen amounts.

If you must buy at the questionable stores, you have a 71% chance of getting natural pollen honey if you BUY ORGANIC HONEY.

It would seem that selling this deceptive product is a violation of several laws and that should be prosecuted!
